Steps for Temporary Mexico Resident Visa
Firstly, you apply for the Temporary Mexico Visa in the Mexican Consulate in the U.S. Secondly, the Mexican Consulate issues a Temporary Mexico Visa for six months, like the sample above affixed to your passport. Thirdly, and most importantly, you must exchange the Temporary Mexico Visa for the Temporary Mexico Resident Card within thirty days after the Temporary Mexico Visa is validated and stamped at the Mexico border or airport.
Set foot in Mexico until the visa is approved
You aren't required to be in Mexico until the visa is approved at the Mexican Consulate in the U.S., if your visa is approved, it will be valid for 180 days, and you have all this time to make your move to Mexico. Yes, you probably wonder why only 180 days. I thought it was good for one year. Do not worry you have 180 days to exchange the visa for the actual temporary resident card, valid for one year.
Canje Procedure
Thirty days after you verify the visa at the Mexico border or airport, you must go to the nearest INM Immigration office close to your Mexico residency address and do the CANJE process. What does Canje mean? It means exchange. In other words, you are exchanging your visa for the actual temporary resident card. How does this work? Do I surrender my visa to the (INM) Immigration office and receive the temporary resident card in return? Well, yes, but it is not that sample.
